Relentless Assault

Relentless Assault was originally introduced in the Mercadian Masques expansion in 1999, designed to provide red decks with an explosive combat-focused win condition. The card allows a player to untap all creatures they control and conduct an additional combat phase, a mechanic that defined the aggressive tempo often associated with the color red in Magic: The Gathering. By the time it was reprinted in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, the card had firmly established itself as a staple for players looking to overwhelm opponents with sudden, multi-attack turns.

The Ninth Edition illustration was provided by artist Greg Staples, who moved away from the more chaotic aesthetic of the original printing to create a more focused, visceral representation of the card's effect. The design intent for the core set version was to standardize the card's frame within the modern border introduced in the Eighth Edition, ensuring visual consistency across the game's evolving aesthetic. Upon its release in the core set, the card was well-received by the player base, remaining a consistent favorite for its ability to turn the tide of a game in a single, decisive turn.
