Provenance

Where it came from

Winter Orb was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a centerpiece for resource-limiting game strategies. The artwork for this version was commissioned from artist Jesper Myrvold, whose minimalist depiction of the crystalline sphere focused on its role as a magical artifact that restricts the untapping of lands. It quickly became a hallmark of control decks, forcing players to carefully manage their mana production under the pressure of its constant, board-wide effect.

The 'Summer Magic' printing, often referred to as Edgar, represents a rare corrected print run intended to replace the flawed 1994 Revised Edition. Due to a distribution error, the vast majority of this run was destroyed, leaving only a small quantity of cards in circulation. Because the artwork and card face were subject to the rigorous quality control standards of this specific production cycle, the Winter Orb from this set is highly sought after by collectors for its historical scarcity and its status as a tangible artifact of the game's early manufacturing struggles.
