Provenance

Where it came from

Sacred Cat was originally printed as a common creature card in the Amonkhet expansion, released by Wizards of the Coast in April 2017. Set in a plane inspired by Ancient Egypt, the card features a feline design that reflects the reverence for cats in Amonkhet's culture, where they were viewed as protectors and manifestations of the gods. Mechanically, it was designed to provide early-game stability in Limited and Constructed formats, as its combination of lifelink and the embalm ability allowed players to recur the creature from the graveyard for additional value.

The card's art was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a clean, elegant style to emphasize the divine nature of the creature within the set’s gilded aesthetic. Upon its release, Sacred Cat became a staple in various aggressive and midrange strategies, particularly within white-aligned decks. It was subsequently included in 'The List'—a rotating selection of cards from Magic's history—to ensure newer players could access relevant pieces for their collections and gameplay.
