Where it came from
Sacred Excavation was released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet set for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed around an Egyptian-inspired plane ruled by the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas, featuring themes of life, death, and desert survival. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's focus on the graveyard, allowing players to return land cards from their discard pile to their hand.
The artwork was commissioned from Noah Bradley, a prominent illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering community at the time. Bradley sought to capture the ethereal, monumental scale of the Amonkhet landscape, depicting a researcher uncovering ancient relics amidst the desert sands.
