Where it came from
Released in 2017 as part of the Amonkhet expansion for Magic: The Gathering, this basic Island card was designed to reflect the aesthetic of a world inspired by Ancient Egypt. The set focuses on themes of trials, gods, and a sun-drenched, desert landscape, which presented a unique challenge for the landscape art: depicting a source of water in a world defined by harsh, arid terrain.
The artwork was commissioned from artist Noah Bradley, who sought to capture the interplay between the oppressive, golden sun of the Amonkhet desert and the serene, refreshing quality of the water. Upon release, the card was widely noted for its vibrant color palette and cinematic composition, eventually becoming a staple for players who preferred a thematic visual cohesion for their deck's mana base.
