Where it came from
Saheeli, the Sun's Brilliance was released as part of the Art Series for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a 2023 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These cards are non-gameplay promotional items included in collector booster packs, designed to highlight the illustrative talent behind the set's character designs. They are printed on thick cardstock with a glossy front, essentially serving as premium postcards that isolate the artwork from the typical frame and text boxes found on playable cards.
The illustration for this specific entry was created by artist Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her detailed, emotive character portraiture. In this piece, Villeneuve emphasizes Saheeli Rai's presence as an artificer of high renown, utilizing vibrant colors and intricate details to reflect the character's mastery over metal and light. The piece was well-received by fans for capturing the character's signature blend of elegance and technological ingenuity within the jungle-themed aesthetic of the Ixalan setting.
