Where it came from
Healing Salve was originally released as part of the Alpha set in 1993, quickly becoming a foundational element of the early Magic: The Gathering gameplay experience. As a white-aligned instant, it was designed by Richard Garfield to provide players with a versatile, low-cost defensive option that emphasized the game's core color philosophy of protection and life replenishment. The Collectors' Edition was produced in 1993 as a non-tournament-legal boxed set, intended primarily for exhibition and collection rather than competitive play.
The artwork for this specific edition features the iconic, minimalist style representative of early Magic illustrators, designed to evoke a sense of high fantasy restoration. While the card is often discussed by enthusiasts for its humble utility compared to more powerful later additions to the game, its design remains a quintessential example of the aesthetic that launched the collectible card game genre. The Collectors' Edition cards are distinguished by their square corners and gold-foil stamps on the reverse, making them highly recognizable to long-term hobbyists.
