Provenance

Where it came from

The Collectors' Edition Plains, numbered 290, was released in 1993 as part of a boxed set intended for display rather than tournament play. It was created by Wizards of the Coast to satisfy the immense demand for the original Magic: The Gathering cards following the sold-out success of the Alpha and Beta printings. Because the game's popularity had outpaced the company's ability to manufacture playable sets, this collection provided fans with access to iconic illustrations that had become difficult to acquire.

The card features the classic, minimalist landscape illustration by Christopher Rush, which helped define the visual language of the game's basic land cards. The Collectors' Edition cards are distinguished from their counterparts by a squared-corner format and gold-foil stamping on the reverse side. While not tournament-legal, the set was well-received by collectors for its high print quality and its preservation of early Magic artwork, effectively serving as an accessible archive of the game's foundational aesthetic.
