Sarah's Wings

Sarah's Wings was released as part of the Mystery Booster: Playtest Cards set in 2021, an unconventional expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were designed to evoke the spirit of early design iterations, featuring a distinctive black-and-white, text-heavy aesthetic that mimics the look of R&D playtest materials. The set served as a humorous and meta-commentary on the game's development process, allowing the design team to experiment with mechanics that were unconventional or deemed too chaotic for standard tournament play.

The card was designed by the Wizards of the Coast team, specifically drawing on the informal, iterative culture of the Magic design studio. The design prioritizes functional playability over final art, utilizing placeholder imagery to reflect the 'work-in-progress' nature of the project. Upon its release within the Mystery Booster product, the card was received by the community as a novelty collector's piece, celebrated for its transparency into the creative process and its refusal to adhere to the strict visual standards of traditional card sets.
