Provenance

Where it came from

Kudzu was first introduced in the Alpha edition of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as part of the game's initial card pool. The card features an enchantment mechanic that reflects the rapid, invasive growth of the real-world plant, forcing players to sacrifice lands as the vine spreads. The original artwork was provided by Quinton Hoover, whose distinct, illustrative style became a hallmark of early Magic aesthetics and helped establish the game's high-fantasy visual identity.

The 'Summer Magic' version, often referred to by collectors as the Edgar set, occupies a unique place in the game's history. It was a limited print run produced in 1994 intended to correct various errors from the Revised edition, but it was largely destroyed due to widespread misprints and production issues. Because the majority of the stock was intended for destruction, surviving cards like this Kudzu are exceptionally rare, making them highly sought after as artifacts of an experimental period in the game's early development.
