Where it came from
The Squirrel Stack was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, the fourth installment in Wizards of the Coast’s 'Un-' series. These sets are designed as silver-bordered or specialized experimental releases, prioritizing humor, non-traditional mechanics, and whimsical art styles over standard tournament legality. The card represents a recurring thematic trope within the Magic: The Gathering universe, where squirrels are often depicted as chaotic, swarm-oriented creatures, here manifested as a literal vertical pile of energetic rodents.
The card’s design reflects the playful, self-referential nature of the set, featuring vibrant, cartoonish aesthetics that lean into the visual absurdity of the creature type. Illustrators for Unfinity were encouraged to push the boundaries of card frame presentation, resulting in artwork that emphasizes character personality and dynamic composition. Upon release, the card was well-received by casual players and those who enjoy 'un-set' mechanics, becoming a sought-after collectible for fans of the game's lighter, more eccentric side.
