Provenance

Where it came from

The Sengir Vampire was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as one of the most iconic creatures in the early history of Magic: The Gathering. Created by Richard Garfield, the game was designed to blend traditional card games with a strategic fantasy tabletop experience. Anson Maddocks provided the original illustration, capturing the gothic, menacing aesthetic that defined the game's initial dark fantasy tone and established the Vampire creature type as a recurring, formidable presence in the lore of the Multiverse.

The 30th Anniversary Edition, released in 2022, serves as a commemorative tribute to these formative years. This version of the Sengir Vampire reprints the original 1993 card art by Anson Maddocks, intentionally maintaining the aesthetic and card frame of the original Limited Edition printings. While not legal for tournament play, these cards were produced for collectors to celebrate the game's historical legacy and the enduring influence of the early artists who shaped its visual identity.
