Where it came from
The Sengir Vampire, originally appearing in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, holds a storied place in the game's history as one of its most iconic early creatures. This 30th Anniversary History Promo version, marked as collector number 3★, was released in 2023 to commemorate three decades of the game. It features the classic illustration by Anson Maddocks, which helped establish the gothic horror aesthetic that defined the game's early visual identity.
This special printing revisits the original design, honoring the legacy of the card while serving as a celebratory collector's piece. The release was intended to evoke nostalgia among long-time players and collectors, highlighting how the character of Baron Sengir and his kin have remained a persistent staple of Magic lore. By retaining the original art, Wizards of the Coast emphasized the enduring artistic foundations laid during the game's inception.
