Where it came from
The Sengir Vampire first appeared in the Alpha edition of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as part of the game's initial core set. It was conceived as a quintessential gothic horror creature, drawing on classic vampire archetypes to serve as a powerful late-game flying threat. As one of the most recognizable creatures in the game's history, it has been reprinted numerous times to maintain its status as a staple of the black color identity.
The Tenth Edition printing, released in 2007, featured new artwork by Greg Staples, who replaced the iconic original illustration by Anson Maddocks. Staples moved away from the minimalist aesthetic of the early 90s to create a more detailed, atmospheric depiction of the vampire.
