Provenance

Where it came from

The Sengir Vampire was originally released in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to be a cornerstone creature of the black mana color identity. It quickly became an iconic representation of gothic horror tropes within the game, characterized by its ability to gain strength by feasting on creatures destroyed in combat.

The International Collectors' Edition version was printed in 1993 as a non-tournament-legal promotional set intended for the international market. These cards feature a distinct gold-bordered back and were packaged as part of a complete boxed set, showcasing the original artwork by Jesper Myrfors. While it was never intended for competitive play, the set is highly regarded by historians of the game for preserving the aesthetic and layout of the early sets in a uniform collection.
