Provenance

Where it came from

The Squirrel token, numbered 15 in the Modern Horizons Token set, was introduced by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. This token was designed to support the specific mechanics reintroduced in the Modern Horizons expansion, which sought to bring niche archetypes and fan-favorite creatures back into the forefront of the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. As a non-collectible component included in booster packs, it serves the practical purpose of representing a 1/1 green Squirrel creature created by various spells and abilities.

The artistic direction for this token follows the established aesthetic of the Modern Horizons set, which emphasizes high-detail digital illustration intended to fit seamlessly into a wide variety of card borders. By providing a dedicated physical token, the designers aimed to streamline gameplay for players utilizing cards like Deep Forest Hermit, which generate these tokens in multiples. The design is intended to be both functional for table-top readability and charming enough to satisfy the long-standing community appeal surrounding Squirrel-themed cards.
