Where it came from
The Seven Dwarves Secret Lair drop was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2020 as part of their limited-edition product line. This set consists of seven distinct versions of the 'Seven Dwarves' card, each illustrated by a different artist to capture the unique personality of the individual dwarf. The cards were designed to allow players to bypass the standard four-card deck limit, enabling them to include up to seven copies of this specific card in a single deck, a mechanic that pays homage to the classic folklore motif.
The artistic direction for this set embraced a diverse range of styles, featuring contributions from illustrators such as Magali Villeneuve, Zezhou Chen, and Clint Cearley. By assigning a unique visual identity to each card, the design team aimed to transform a utilitarian game piece into a collectible series that functions both as a functional tool for gameplay and a cohesive art portfolio. The release was well-received by collectors who appreciated the thematic consistency and the unconventional aesthetic choices that moved away from standard Magic: The Gathering card templates.
