Provenance

Where it came from

The Shapeshifter token, cataloged as number 1 in the Duskmourn Commander Tokens set, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2024. It serves as a gameplay aid for Magic: The Gathering, designed specifically to represent creatures created by cards within the horror-themed Duskmourn expansion. The visual design leans into the set's retro-inspired aesthetic, drawing on the tropes of 1980s and 90s supernatural horror media, which emphasizes themes of isolation and psychological dread.

The artwork for these tokens was produced as part of the broader artistic direction for Duskmourn, which prioritized a nostalgic, tactile look to ground the set's surreal narrative. By utilizing a distinct visual language separate from the standard core set cards, the design team aimed to provide players with a clear, atmospheric marker for gameplay mechanics involving creature transformation. Like many tokens in modern Commander sets, it was crafted to be functionally versatile while reinforcing the specific thematic identity of the house-plane it represents.
