Where it came from
The Shark token was released in 2024 as part of the Outlaws of Thunder Junction Commander set for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced to support specific mechanics within the expansion, designed to represent creatures summoned or created during gameplay by various card effects. As part of a Western-themed set, the artwork captures a stylized, fantastical interpretation of a shark that fits the rugged, high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the plane of Thunder Junction.
The design of the token reflects the collaborative visual language of Wizards of the Coast, where consistent art direction ensures tokens remain identifiable during fast-paced tabletop play. While individual artists are often commissioned for specific tokens within these sets, the visual identity is tightly managed to align with the expansion's world-building goals. The card was well-received by players for its utility in gameplay, providing a functional and thematic physical representation of a non-permanent creature on the battlefield.
