What it does

Destroy all artifacts. They can't be regenerated.

Chains of leaping fire and sizzling lightning laid waste the artificers' handiwork, sparing not a single device.

Provenance

Where it came from

Shatterstorm was released in 1994 as part of the Magic: The Gathering 'Summer Magic' set, formally known as Edgar. This set was intended to be a corrected reprint of the Revised Edition, designed to rectify various printing errors and color inconsistencies from the base set. However, the release itself was fraught with logistical issues, leading to the vast majority of the print run being destroyed by the manufacturer, which left only a small quantity of packs to reach the public.

The card features artwork by Jeff A. Menges, who provided numerous illustrations for the game's early sets. The design of Shatterstorm—a sorcery that destroys all artifacts—was intended to serve as a powerful board-wipe mechanic within the game's evolving color pie. Due to its extreme scarcity in the Summer Magic printing, the card is held in high regard by completionist collectors who focus on the unique history of the Edgar set.
