Where it came from
Shigeki, Jukai Visionary was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The set served as a thematic return to the plane of Kamigawa, reimagining its original feudal Japanese folklore roots through a futuristic, cyberpunk-influenced lens. Designed as a legendary creature, Shigeki represents the intersection of the set's technological themes and the persistent spirit of the Jukai forest, serving as a tactical card that allows players to recur resources from their graveyard.
The artwork for the card was provided by illustrator Livia Prima, who utilized a lush, verdant color palette to contrast with the neon-saturated aesthetic prevalent elsewhere in the set. Prima's illustration depicts the character as an ancient, earthen figure, emphasizing the harmonious blend of nature and spiritual resonance that defines the green-aligned factions of Kamigawa. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile utility piece for commander-format players, praised for its unique channel ability and its thematic depth within the set's dualistic world-building.
