Where it came from
Shigeki, Jukai Visionary was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The card represents a reimagining of the plane of Kamigawa, shifting it from its original feudal roots into a futuristic, cyberpunk-inspired setting. The character Shigeki is depicted as an ancient kami of the Jukai forest, designed to bridge the aesthetic gap between the organic, spiritual nature of the forest and the technological advancements defining the new neon-soaked environment.
The card was illustrated by Japanese artist Daisuke Izuka, whose work frequently appears in the game. Izuka focused on the ethereal, shifting form of the kami, balancing vibrant, natural greens with the soft, glowing light characteristic of the set's artistic direction. Upon release, the card saw immediate play in various competitive formats due to its unique ability to recur cards from the graveyard, solidifying its place in the game's broader history as a staple utility piece.
