Where it came from
Signpost Scarecrow was originally released as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion in 2019, set within a plane heavily inspired by classic fairy tales and Arthurian legend. Within the game's mechanics, it serves as a colorless artifact creature, reflecting the broader lore of Eldraine where sentient constructs and enchanted objects populate the enchanted landscape. It was included in The List, a curated selection of cards from Magic: The Gathering history that appear in Set Boosters, to allow players a chance to pull older or thematic cards in modern packs.
The card was illustrated by Wisnutsucre, who captured the eerie, rustic aesthetic of a living straw figure tasked with guarding, yet ultimately abandoned to the elements. The design emphasizes the card's function as a defensive tool that can be activated to provide specific tactical utility on the battlefield. Upon its release, it was regarded as a functional utility piece, noted for its ability to fit into a variety of deck archetypes due to its artifact nature and accessible mana cost.
