Where it came from
Signpost Scarecrow was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set drew heavily from European folklore and Arthurian legend, reimagining these motifs through a high-fantasy lens. As an artifact creature, the Scarecrow was designed to provide colorless utility and mana-fixing for players, fitting into the set's broader exploration of fairy tale themes where inanimate objects often come to life.
The card's illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who rendered the construct with an eerie, rustic aesthetic that aligns with the atmospheric visual language of the Eldraine setting. His design captures the quintessential image of a guard stationed in a field, utilizing the weathered textures and looming posture typical of the creature type. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if niche, inclusion in draft environments, valued primarily for its versatility in multi-colored deck strategies.
