Where it came from
Sign in Blood is a classic black spell from the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, originally debuting in the 2010 set Magic 2011. The card represents the exchange of life force for knowledge, a core theme in the game's color philosophy. This specific iteration appears in the 2021 Strixhaven Art Series, a set of promotional cards dedicated to showcasing the intricate illustrations featured in the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion.
The artwork for this particular version was rendered by illustrator Campbell White. In keeping with the aesthetic of the Strixhaven set, the piece shifts the tone from the standard dark, visceral fantasy of the original card to the academic and arcane setting of a magical university. The illustration was received positively by collectors for its polished technique and its ability to reinterpret a utilitarian card through a fresh, conceptual lens.
