Where it came from
Silverback Shaman was released as part of the Jumpstart 2022 set for Magic: The Gathering, a product line designed to facilitate quick, pick-up-and-play gaming experiences. The card draws on the long-standing tradition of primate-themed creatures within the game, serving as a functional, mid-range green creature that provides both a sturdy defensive body and a card-draw ability upon its death, reinforcing the resource-efficiency themes common to the color green.
The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures a mystical, imposing gorilla adorned with shamanic regalia, grounding the card in the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the Dominaria and plane-agnostic sets. Staples' work is known for its gritty, textured detail, which serves here to elevate a common-rarity creature into a figure of tribal reverence. The card was well-received by players for its utility in limited formats and its contribution to ape-themed tribal decks, which frequently appear as a recurring design motif in Magic's history.
