Where it came from
Shivan Reef was originally introduced in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering set Apocalypse as part of a cycle of pain lands, which require players to pay life to access colored mana. This specific version, numbered 255p, was released as a promotional card for the 2022 Dominaria United set. It features updated, modern card frames and a distinct promotional stamp, serving as a reprint intended to provide players with accessible versions of classic utility lands during the return to the game's foundational plane.
The card's art showcases the harsh, volcanic landscape of the Shivan region, a hallmark of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. While the original iteration aimed to define the aggressive mana-fixing landscape of early competitive play, this reprint focuses on visual consistency within the contemporary card frame design. It was widely received as a functional staple for Commander and constructed formats, valued by players for its ability to provide both blue and red mana options efficiently.
