Where it came from
Sisay, Weatherlight Captain first appeared as a legendary creature in the 2019 Modern Horizons set, representing the iconic captain of the skyship Weatherlight. This particular iteration was released as part of a specialized Secret Lair drop, a series introduced by Wizards of the Coast to offer fans uniquely illustrated, limited-run versions of popular cards that depart from the standard aesthetic of the game.
The artistic direction for this Secret Lair version sought to recontextualize the character within a distinct visual style, moving away from traditional fantasy tropes to provide collectors with a more stylized, contemporary depiction. As with many cards in the Secret Lair series, the release was designed to serve as a high-concept collectible, finding a receptive audience among players who value artistic variety and the narrative depth of Magic: The Gathering’s long-standing lore.
