Where it came from
Sisay, Weatherlight Captain was originally released in the 2019 Modern Horizons set as a legendary creature representing the iconic captain of the Weatherlight airship. This specific version appeared as part of the Secret Lair series, a collection of curated, limited-release cards featuring unique artistic treatments that deviate from the standard aesthetic of Magic: The Gathering. The card design draws on the deep lore of the Weatherlight Saga, capturing Sisay’s role as a legendary navigator and leader within the game's multi-dimensional narrative.
The artwork for this Secret Lair iteration was created by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent illustrator in the fantasy community known for her detailed, emotive portraiture. Villeneuve aimed to emphasize Sisay’s gravitas and commanding presence, moving away from the more action-oriented depictions common in early sets to focus on the character's regal and tactical nature. Upon its release, this version was well-received by collectors and players who appreciate the stylistic shift, often being sought after as a centerpiece for Commander format decks centered around five-color legendary synergies.
