Where it came from
The Snow-Covered Forest card, featured as collector number 5 in the 'Secret Lair' drop titled 'Happy Little Gathering,' was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2020. This special edition set was created as a tribute to the late painter Bob Ross, incorporating his signature wet-on-wet oil painting style into the aesthetics of Magic: The Gathering. The initiative sought to blend the iconic, tranquil landscapes of Ross's television series with the mechanics of the collectible card game.
The artwork features a faithful reproduction of a winter landscape, capturing the serene woods and soft lighting characteristic of Ross's work. The design team intentionally maintained the original textures and brushstrokes of the source paintings to preserve the therapeutic tone of the artist's legacy. Upon its release, the drop was well-received by the player base, largely due to its nostalgic appeal and the unique departure from standard high-fantasy card illustration styles.
