Where it came from
Sorin the Mirthless is a planeswalker card released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card depicts the character Sorin Markov, a central figure in the game's lore and an ancient vampire of the Innistrad plane. This specific version, numbered 278, features an illustrative treatment designed to highlight the gothic horror themes inherent to the set, which focuses on the wedding of the vampire progenitor Olivia Voldaren.
The card was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her expressive character work. Her design for this iteration of Sorin leans into a brooding, melancholic aesthetic, reflecting the character's internal conflict and his complex role within the ongoing storyline of Innistrad. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its balance of thematic flavor and functional utility in competitive formats.
