Where it came from
Sorin the Mirthless is a planeswalker card introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The set served as a gothic horror celebration, centered on the wedding of the vampire progenitor Olivia Voldaren. The character Sorin Markov, a hallmark of the Innistrad plane, is depicted here in a subdued, melancholic state reflecting his complex history with the world and his personal exile.
The art for this specific version, designated collector number 337, features a distinctive 'fang' border treatment characteristic of the set's special treatments. The visual style aims to capture the dark, aristocratic aesthetic of Innistrad’s vampire nobility. As a centerpiece planeswalker card for the set, it was designed to offer players a repeatable card-draw engine and a recurring threat, and it remains a widely recognized staple in black-based deck archetypes.
