Where it came from
Sorin the Mirthless is a planeswalker card released in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card depicts Sorin Markov, a central figure in the game's lore, as he navigates the gothic horror setting of Innistrad. This specific version, numbered 131s, is a promotional variant featuring the 'fang frame' treatment, which was designed to emphasize the vampire-themed aesthetic of the set's narrative.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned fantasy artist who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering card pool. Her design intent was to capture Sorin's stoic yet melancholic nature, utilizing a stark color palette to distinguish the character against the dark, foreboding backdrop of the Innistrad plane. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for both its thematic integration into the set's story and its mechanical utility in competitive gameplay.
