Where it came from
Sorin the Mirthless is a planeswalker card introduced in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The card depicts Sorin Markov, a central figure in the game's lore and a native of the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad. This specific version, numbered 297, features stylized 'Fang' frame artwork created by illustrator Magali Villeneuve, which was designed to lean into the vampire-centric themes of the Crimson Vow narrative.
The card was received as a notable addition to the game's meta-game due to its versatile utility, offering players the ability to draw cards, create tokens, and utilize a powerful ultimate ability. Magali Villeneuve’s art was praised by the player base for its evocative, somber aesthetic, which successfully captured Sorin's weary yet dangerous personality as the protector of his plane. The card remains a staple of modern gothic-themed deck building.
