Provenance

Where it came from

The Wolf token was released in 2008 as part of the Shadowmoor expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set introduced a distinct aesthetic defined by the gloom and distorted folklore of the plane of Lorwyn during its transition into a darker, nightmarish cycle. Tokens were produced as supplemental game pieces to represent creatures summoned by specific spells and abilities, such as those generated by cards like Howl of the Night Pack.

The artwork for this particular token was created by the illustrator Chippy. Known for his ability to blend gritty textures with evocative, often unsettling imagery, Chippy designed the Wolf to feel feral and ethereal, fitting the set’s theme of nature corrupted by shadow. Upon its release, the token was well-received by players for its atmospheric consistency with the set's dark, gothic-inspired visuals, becoming a staple for players utilizing green-based token strategies.
