Where it came from
Squirrel Mob was originally printed in the Odyssey set in 2001, but the version here appeared in the 2021 release Modern Horizons 2 as part of a nostalgic push to update classic squirrel-themed mechanics for contemporary play. It was designed to synergize with the game's broader 'tribal' strategies, allowing players to build exponentially stronger board states as the number of squirrel creatures under their control increases.
The artwork for this particular iteration was crafted by illustrator Simon Dominic, who sought to capture the chaotic and overwhelming nature of a 'mob' of squirrels. The design leans into the whimsical and lighthearted tone often associated with squirrel-themed cards in Magic: The Gathering, and it was well-received by players who appreciated both the card's competitive utility in swarm-based decks and its humorous, flavorful depiction of woodland mayhem.
