Where it came from
The Squirrel Stack card was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set for Magic: The Gathering. This set, the fourth in the Un-series, was designed by Wizards of the Coast to blend silver-bordered gameplay mechanics with black-bordered legality for the first time, focusing on sci-fi and carnival aesthetics. The card itself leans into the whimsical, humor-forward identity that defines the Un-sets, featuring a literal stack of squirrels as the subject matter.
The illustration was created by artist Lindsey Look, who has contributed numerous pieces to the Magic: The Gathering franchise. Look’s design emphasizes the lighthearted, surreal nature of the card, utilizing a playful color palette and expressive character work to depict the chaotic anatomy of the stack. Upon its release, the card was received warmly by collectors for its humorous art and its utility within the casual Commander format, standing out as a signature inclusion for players focused on creature-type tribal themes.
