Where it came from
The Squirrel Stack card was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity set, the fourth installment in Magic: The Gathering's 'Un-' series. These sets are designed for casual play and are known for their humorous, unconventional mechanics that push the boundaries of traditional rules. As a 'sticker' mechanic card, it reflects the set's thematic focus on carnival and space-age absurdity, tasking players with physically placing sticker elements onto cards to track game states.
The art for the card was created by artist Lindsey Look, who has contributed numerous illustrations to the game. The design leans into the whimsical tone of the Unfinity set, depicting a precarious tower of squirrels to match the card's function of stacking power and toughness counters. Like many cards in the Un-sets, it was received primarily as a novelty item intended for lighthearted gameplay, though its unique mechanics made it a distinctive curiosity for collectors of Magic’s more experimental card designs.
