Where it came from
Squirrel Stack was released in 2022 as part of the Unfinity expansion for Magic: The Gathering, a set designed to blend the game's traditional mechanics with the humorous, self-referential spirit of the Un-series. Like other cards in the set, it was created to experiment with unconventional gameplay rules, specifically utilizing the set's sticker mechanics. The illustration was provided by artist Ron Spencer, who leaned into the chaotic and whimsical aesthetic characteristic of Un-set squirrels, depicting a precarious, gravity-defying tower of rodents.
The design of Squirrel Stack reflects the playful innovation Wizards of the Coast intended for Unfinity, aiming to provide a lighthearted experience that pushes the boundaries of standard card behavior. While the card is not legal for tournament play, it was received as a charming addition for casual players and cube enthusiasts. The artwork maintains Spencer's distinct style, balancing comedic visual storytelling with the eccentric visual language that has defined the franchise's more irreverent releases for decades.
