Stream of Life

Stream of Life was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural printing of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game was conceived as a portable, expandable card system that combined strategic depth with a fantasy aesthetic. Within the context of the early game, this green-aligned card allowed players to recover life points based on the amount of mana invested, embodying the restorative themes of nature-based magic found in early sets.

The card’s illustration was provided by artist Jesper Myrfors, who served as the original art director for the game. His design sought to capture the ethereal and fluid essence of nature's vitality through a minimalist and somewhat somber artistic lens typical of the Alpha set's era. Upon its release, the card became a staple for players navigating the nascent mechanics of early deck construction, valued for its straightforward utility and its place in the foundation of the game's long-standing design language.
