Where it came from
Sunbird's Invocation originally debuted in the 2017 Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. It was designed as a rare enchantment that rewards players for casting spells by allowing them to look at the top cards of their library and cast a spell of lesser mana value for free, capturing the mechanical theme of card advantage and explosive, high-impact plays associated with the plane's sun-worshipping culture.
The card features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, a renowned fantasy illustrator known for her expressive character work and intricate lighting. Her design for the card focuses on the vibrant, avian-inspired aesthetic of the Sun Empire, emphasizing a sense of divine magic and grandeur that solidified the card's status as a staple in Commander formats for years following its release. Its inclusion in the Starter Commander Decks series serves to provide players with a powerful, engine-building tool that epitomizes the excitement of the red color identity.
