Where it came from
Sunbird's Invocation was originally released as a rare enchantment in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on exploration, mesoamerican-inspired civilizations, and the power of ancient celestial forces. This specific iteration is a promo version, characterized by its unique foil treatment and collector number 165p, which distinguishes it from the standard version found in regular booster packs.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive, ethereal style. Voss sought to capture the awe-inspiring nature of a sun-worshipping ritual, utilizing vibrant colors and light effects to emphasize the card's ability to trigger powerful effects from the library. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its high mana value and potential to create significant card advantage in casual and Commander formats.
