Where it came from
Sunbird's Invocation was originally released in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ixalan. The card was designed as a rare enchantment that rewards players for casting spells by allowing them to look through the top of their library for a card of lesser cost, reflecting the set's thematic focus on exploration and discovery within a mesoamerican-inspired jungle plane.
This specific iteration is a promotional version, cataloged as 165s, which was distributed through organized play events or promotional programs. The illustration, created by artist Zack Stella, captures the vibrant, celestial aesthetic of the Ixalan setting. It was well-received by players for its high-impact, chaotic potential in Commander and other casual formats, becoming a staple for decks focused on large, expensive spells.
