Where it came from
Tenacious Underdog was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco and noir aesthetics, focusing on the power dynamics of a city controlled by five distinct crime syndicates. This card serves as a representative of the Riveteers, the labor-union-turned-organized-crime faction that values brute strength and persistence in the industrial underbelly of the city.
The card was illustrated by David Auden Nash, who utilized a moody, high-contrast style that emphasizes the character's rugged nature and grit. Designed as a flexible creature with a recursive ability, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in both aggressive and late-game strategies. It quickly became a staple in various formats due to its ability to return from the graveyard, embodying the relentless spirit of the underdog archetype it represents.
