Where it came from
Tenacious Underdog was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws inspiration from 1920s noir and Art Deco aesthetics, framing the game's mechanics within a city controlled by powerful crime syndicates. This card specifically represents the gritty, resilient atmosphere of the lower-class citizens struggling to survive within the city's hierarchy.
The artwork was illustrated by Manuel Castañón, who utilized a moody, cinematic lighting style to emphasize the card's theme of relentless persistence. Mechanically, the card features the blitz ability, allowing it to be played aggressively and recurred from the graveyard, a design choice intended to mirror the titular character’s refusal to stay down despite the odds.
