Where it came from
Tenacious Underdog was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna set in 2022, a Magic: The Gathering expansion inspired by the aesthetics of 1920s Art Deco and film noir crime syndicates. This specific card, numbered 97p, was distributed as a promotional version, often featuring unique frame treatments or extended art that emphasizes the gritty, urban underworld theme central to the plane of New Capenna.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the resilience of the character through a style that leans into the moody, high-contrast lighting characteristic of the noir genre. Mechanically, the card was designed to highlight the recurring nature of the 'Grixis' color identity, focusing on sacrifice and graveyard recursion, which resonated with players looking for efficient, grind-focused gameplay within the competitive formats of the time.
