Where it came from
Wharf Infiltrator was introduced in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Eldritch Moon, a set centered on the cosmic horror narrative of the plane of Innistrad. The card was specifically released as part of the promotional set for the expansion, featuring distinct alternate art that departed from the standard aesthetic of the core set. The design draws heavily from the Lovecraftian themes that defined this era of the game, emphasizing the transformation and corruption of local inhabitants by eldritch forces.
The artwork for this particular promotional version was crafted to evoke a sense of uncanny fluidity, reflecting the creature's gameplay function of discarding cards to create tokens. By utilizing an aesthetic of mystery and urban decay, the illustrator sought to ground the surreal elements of the set within the gothic atmosphere of the Innistrad setting. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile utility piece for blue-aligned decks, noted by players for its ability to filter card draws while providing a recurring offensive presence.
