Where it came from
The Thran Spider card, numbered 254p, was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2022 Magic: The Gathering expansion, The Brothers' War. The set serves as a narrative return to the franchise's foundational lore, specifically the ancient conflict between the artificer brothers Urza and Mishra. This card features the 'retro frame' treatment, an aesthetic choice designed to evoke the visual language of the game's earliest printings from the mid-1990s, appealing to collectors nostalgic for the original aesthetic.
The artwork for this specific card was commissioned to fit within the broader mechanical and thematic scope of the expansion, which focuses on the transition from the golden age of the Thran Empire to the desolation caused by the war. As a promo version, it utilizes a distinct foil treatment on the borderless or retro-frame variants, distinguishing it from the standard card found in draft boosters. It was distributed through organized play events and promotional store kits, marking it as a deliberate piece of fan-service designed to highlight the historical depth of the game's setting.
