Where it came from
Three Tree City was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Bloomburrow. Set within the whimsical and woodland-themed plane of Bloomburrow, the card represents a central landmark of the animal-folk society featured in the narrative. Its mechanical design focuses on tribal synergy, reflecting the communal nature of the inhabitants depicted throughout the set.
The illustration was crafted by artist Jason Rainville, who sought to capture the cozy yet imposing scale of a city constructed within the roots of a giant tree. The aesthetic aligns with the soft, storybook-inspired art direction of the Bloomburrow set, emphasizing pastoral beauty and the interconnected ecosystem of the plane. Upon its release, the card was widely discussed by players for its significant impact on format-specific gameplay, particularly in Commander.
