Where it came from
Three Tree City was released in 2024 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Bloomburrow, a thematic expansion inspired by cottagecore aesthetics and anthropomorphic animal folklore. The card was designed as a powerful utility land specifically intended to reward players for building creature-heavy decks, fitting seamlessly into the set’s focus on tribal synergies and cozy, rural world-building.
The artwork was created by illustrator Ilse Gort, who leaned into the idyllic, storybook charm central to the plane of Bloomburrow. By depicting the titular tree as a bustling, multi-level home for woodland creatures, Gort grounded the card's mechanical utility in the whimsical, communal identity of the setting, resulting in a design that was widely celebrated for its warm visual language and immediate competitive impact.
